Welcome to Crabby Cards!
Hello, my name is Scott Clarke, artist, writer, production, packaging and marketing guy of Crabby Cards. This is a small business I run from my bedroom at home, my daughter took my little home office for a playroom! I began this work just a few years ago with the intent combining my artistic abilities and my own brand of humor, which tends to be a bit "Crabby" I have since designed greeting cards on subjects such as aging, golf, navy football(an Annapolis thing!), corvettes and much more. Though I enjoy the challenge of combining subject matter with artwork, I have also craved the opportunity to help others in some way with my work.
Which brings about the question quite frequently asked of me, "Why Breast Cancer Awareness?" About the same time I began Crabby Cards my Mother-In-law was battling a second time with breast cancer. I looked on and felt helpless, I wanted so badly to help in some way, which I believe is a feeling men everywhere go through when confronted with this disease, even though 1% of yearly diagnosed cases are men. Then my ex-wife and her sister were tested and found to carry the mutated gene which increases their chances of developing breast cancer. My ex-wife and her sister have both opted for precautionary surgeries, and then my concern deepened for the fate of my ten year old daughter whose breasts had just begun to develop, my fatherly fear and need to protect her set in, I wondered how could I possibly make a difference? In order for us to battle horrific diseases we must pass along knowledge.
It was about this time that a friend of mine Kim, who is involved with the local "Save the Boobies" foundation, approached me and asked me if I would design some greeting cards to help promote a breast cancer awareness event they had coming up. I was immediately on board and felt this was my calling! It has since been an amazing, educational and bittersweet journey. I have met women with courage I could only dream of having, survivors with stories that are moving beyond what I could ever put in a greeting card. These women continue to fill me with inspiration that flows through me and on to paper.
I try very hard to incorporate every aspect I can in to my work, from the importance of ‘Early Detection" to the "Spiritual and Supportive" needs we all have as human beings. Giving women a chance to share compassion AND very important information. I also do my best to make my work affordable so that organizations are able to raise funds for their specific goals to be met. After all it’s about making a difference, NOT making a fortune. Custom designs are also fun for me, incorporating organizations names, logos, caricatures, and other specifics to help them in their outreach. Yes I am a man, and I have a voice that I want to use to speak out for women all over including my daughter, and when it comes to survival and compassion does it matter whether the voice is that of a man or a woman?
Now I have also begun to use my talents in hopes to help others in their fight to get the word out, designing cards touching on leukemia, Ovarian Cancer, Cervical Cancer and Children with Cancer. I am hoping to engage my work wherever possible, sharing what God has blessed me with and hoping that it helps in some way. I have been given the opportunity to work with many support and awareness organizations across the country and look forward to continuing to help as long as I can hold up a colored pencil!
Sharing my work with children has also become a passion of mine, teaching illustration to children of all ages and mentally challenged young adults. Art has no boundaries and I am amazed at what I learn every time I share the room with any of these children and young adults.
